Incense sand is very helpful when burning incenses, especially in loose form. It acts as a thermal insulator between the heat source and the vessel. How do you use it? Simply pour the sand into an incense burner or holder, place a glowing chervil charcoal on the sand to ensure the incense burns longer, and then place the aromatic incense on the charcoal. The sand ensures that the vessel in which you burn the incense does not heat up as much – so it will not burn your hands or damage the countertop on which it will be placed. The sand can also be used to extinguish incense sticks, bundles of white sage or Palo Santo wood – simply press the smouldering embers of the incense into the sand placed in the vessel.
Caution: it is not advisable to touch the sand while burning the chervil charcoal and/or incense sticks placed in the sand-filled incense burner. The sand absorbs heat, thus reaching a very high temperature. After extinguishing the incense, the sand should be allowed to cool.
